Yosemite on my Mind

My mom and I are planning a little trip to Yosemite this summer. (!!!!!)  It's a destination that has been on my list for a long, long time.  In fact, I can still clearly recall an Ansel Adams print of Half Dome hanging in the home of family friends--a memory that dates back to 1991.  I was 8.

As is often the case, now that I'm serious about going, "Yosemite" seems to be everywhere.  Links, people who've been, books, articles, and photos just keep popping up all over the place.  (Someone once told me this is called "top of the mind consciousness".  I guess it's a marketing term.)  Of all the resources that I've run across lately, this video has definitely made an impression.  It's both terrifying and amazing--to such a degree that my palms were sweaty after the first time I watched it.

Warning:  If you're scared of heights, this video is probably not for you.

See what I mean?

Look Both Ways

This video shows the organized chaos also known as "traffic" in Ho Chi Minh City.  Although we didn't get a chance to visit HCMC, Hanoi bears a striking resemblance.  Crazy!

Remembering Japan

One year ago today, Japan was reeling from an earthquake -- turned tsunami -- turned nuclear disaster. It was one of the worst tragedies in the new millennium.

This video doesn't shy away from the terror of the moment and the horror of the first days. But even in the awful aftermath, the film shifts focus and brings hope to the forefront. It is a beautiful tribute to the people of Japan who who are fighting hard to rebuild what they love.

Japan-I'm still thinking of you.

Have Fun Storming the Castle

Sometimes when you grow up on a certain movie, it has a special little spot in your heart--even when you openly acknowledge that from a more discriminate perspective it's not really that cool. For me, Princess Bride, in all its slapstick humor, happens to be one of those classic films.  I associate it with so many great quotes, so many great scenes, and so many great slumber party memories.  Apparently the cast got together this summer for their 25th year reunion; apparently I just couldn't resist sharing this pic.  It makes me happy.

P.S. If the casts for Anne of Green Gables, Full House,  Home Alone, or Hallmark's Sarah Plain & Tall ever host reunions, I'll probably be posting photos of that on here, too.  Just warning you.

My Swiss Wish

Wish I may,
Wish I might,
Go to Whitepod,
Stay the night.

I was intrigued when I read "charming village," "ecotourism," "heart of the Swiss Alps," and "ultimate mountain escape for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike."
I was hooked when I saw the photos . . .

All images are screenshots from here.

What a perfect winter wonderland!

Beluga + Mariachi Band = Cuteness

Although I'm not pleased to see this little guy confined to a glass cage, I am glad to know that he appreciates a good mariachi band when he sees one.

Happy Birthday Dad & Wendy!

If I had a 'family birthday month,' August would be it. There are special dates on the calendar for the step-mom, the mom, the grandma, and the dad. Today happens to be the birthday of the dad. Happy Birthday, Dad!!

"Working on the Farm" from the talented This Paper Ship

This print is a birthday gift for both the dad and the step-mom. (Sorry I wasn't home to frame it and deliver it in person! I hope it's arrived in the mail by now!) The instant I saw it, I thought of them--they both love to garden and they both love each other. Every time I glance at the illustration, I get these very same impressions. Plus, in real life they look extremely similar to the cute little cartoon couple--boots, basket, cowboy shirt, smirk and all.

Wishing you good things all year and especially on your birthday(s)!

Theater Clouds by Elly Mackay

I was wandering through Etsy when I stumbled across this dreamy little shop. The artist, Elly Mackay, photographs her unbelievably beautiful three-dimensional paper theater art.

This is my favorite. Probably because this is one of my very favorite books.

Incredible, no? You can read about the way she makes these images right here.

Blast from The Past

Both my mom and my grandpa recently sent me photographs from a few years ago. I love how they're all of me doing what I've always been able to do well: Enjoy summer!

The pictures reminded me of the work of a rather interesting photographer, Irina Werning. Her "Back to the Future" series is both quirky and cool.

Pancho from Buenos Aires (1983 & 2010)

Flo, Maria, Dolores (1979 & 2010)

Nico in Buenos Aires (1983 & 2010)

Mechi in Buenos Aires (1990 & 2010)

Flor, Male, Sil (1983 & 2010)

Marita & Coty (1977 & 2010)

What I'm most fascinated by in all of these pictures is the clothes. How did they find such accurate big kid versions? If you're interested, head here to see more of her "Back to the Future" work. (Just to warn you--there's a few kids who are not completely dressed, hence . . .)

P.S. I also think the fast forward fifty years version of this pic would be pretty awesome. Ha!

Silliness Vid

Thought it might be kind of nice to end the week on such an absolutely silly note. [Pun intended.]
